Pet Post: Spring 2025 edition

Dear Friend,
At the General Assembly three months ago, the Richmond SPCA stood alongside 80 other no-kill Virginia shelters, celebrating the remarkable strides being made for homeless animals across the Commonwealth. The event was filled with hope and promise for a no-kill future, both for our region and the state. Today, as you receive this newsletter, I want to share how your continued support is turning that hope into reality.

While the Richmond SPCA has been a no-kill shelter since 2002, we are equally driven to create and sustain no-kill communities where all shelters – fueled by our collective compassion – are saving the lives of at least 90% of their homeless dogs or cats, the nationally-recognized no-kill benchmark. Currently, Virginia’s shelters and Greater Richmond-Area shelters have a combined save rate within five percent of that benchmark.
To help spread no kill, the Richmond SPCA is targeting the underlying causes of animal homelessness and providing lifesaving solutions through high-volume spay and neuter, pet food pantries, crisis boarding, accessible veterinary care, and pet training, while also directly sheltering, rehabilitating, and rehoming 4,000 animals annually. And, over the last 10 years, we have welcomed about 25,000 animals into our care from over 60 Virginia partners, easing capacity issues as they arise.
Creating and sustaining no-kill communities is a cooperative effort, and your generous financial support is the lifeline that enables us to expand our reach and deepen our impact. Every dollar you give directly translates into lives saved and futures transformed.
Please consider making a gift today. The rising costs of veterinary care, supplies and other operational expenses present a significant challenge, and your support is more critical than ever.
We are so close to making our region and Virginia no kill. We can – and will – achieve this together. You play a critical role in helping us close the gap and guarantee a future to every homeless animal who can and must be saved. They are counting on us.
With heartfelt gratitude,

Tamsen Kingry
