November 3 – December 15, 2021
No class November 24
Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Please read the Richmond SPCA Training Class COVID-19 Policies before attending your first class. Due to space constraints, this class is limited to 1 adult handler per dog during Covid-19 to allow for better social distancing.

Instructor: Lesley Gurule

For puppies 8-16 weeks of age at the start of class. Getting your puppy started on the right track is very important. Good Start Puppy combines socialization, problem prevention, an introduction to training, and most importantly, fun!  Your puppy can start learning anything at this age, but you have a short window to help mold how he or she will see the world as an adult.

We will concentrate on socialization with people and other dogs while introducing foundational manners and skills. We will also spend time on exercises to help prevent common behavior challenges. Lots of playtime with other puppies is included, and your dog may make life-long friends!

We will discuss:

  • The importance of socialization at an early age
  • How dogs learn and an introduction to clicker training
  • How to identify friendly play with other dogs
  • Name recognition
  • Sit
  • Come
  • Confidence building
  • Jumping up
  • Leash walking
  • Resource guarding prevention
  • Body handling
  • Mouthing

The first class is for people only.

All puppies must be 8-16 weeks of age and current on vaccinations. Puppy classes are designed to be followed by Surviving Adolescence.

Six-session, one-hour class at School for Dogs within Smoky’s Training Center
