Is the Dog Jog and 5K Run still taking place?

No. The 18th Annual Dog Jog and 5K Run, sponsored by Holiday Barn Pet Resorts, scheduled for Saturday March 21st has been cancelled. The Richmond SPCA has been carefully monitoring public health advice regarding large gatherings in wake of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic. Today, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney advised organizers of large community events to cancel or postpone their activities in an effort to minimize the spread of the virus, particularly among at-risk populations. With these new developments, we made the difficult yet prudent decision to cancel the Dog Jog and 5K Run portion of this event. You can read our media release here. We will be rescheduling our Dominion Energy Vendor Fair for a time that is convenient and safe for everyone. Stay tuned and we hope to see you then!

What about the After Paw-ty at Hardywood RVA?

The After Paw-ty at Hardywood is also cancelled. We are incredibly grateful to the bands, food trucks, vendors, and Hardywood for their support and willingness to contribute to the After Paw-ty. Many vendors were offering a percentage of sales to support the Richmond SPCA. Our plans are to transform the Dog Jog and 5K Run into a virtual event and postpone the vendor fair for a time that is convenient and safe for everyone. Our friends at Hardywood have offered to work with us to plan an event at a time that works for everyone and is safe for the public. We will work hard to incorporate as many of the original details as possible. 

A very special thank you to our scheduled bands, Paulo Franco & The Freightliners, The Rob Williams Band and WKNDR. Also thank you to River City Wood Fire and La Bete food trucks, who were planning to give a donation of their sales back to the Richmond SPCA. And especially thank you to our dear friends at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery  in Richmond. In addition to being amazing, pet-friendly neighbors, they were also going to donate a percentage of beer sales. The generosity is deeply appreciated.

I am a registered participant for Dog Jog and/or the 5K run. What should I do?

Thank you for registering. This is an important day for the Richmond SPCA and this event raises significant funds annually to benefit the homeless cats and dogs in our care. We are so grateful for your registration and any fundraising you have achieved to support homeless animals! Since this is one of our largest fundraising events, we ask that you consider running the race at another time as a Virtual Participant.

You can pick up your packet—which includes your t-shirt, race bib, and SWAG from our amazing vendors—next week and run a 5K, sponsored by Williams Mullen or complete a 1 Mile Dog Jog, sponsored by Zoetis, with your pup through your own neighborhood or on your favorite trail. Take a picture, tag the Richmond SPCA, and use the hashtag #VirtualDogJog. Tag yourself on our Virtual Dog Jog map so we can see where you’re participating! The homeless pets in our care will love you for it, and so will we! We will communicate to all registrants our plans for a safe and easy packet pick-up in the days to come. Also, please join us for the Dominion Energy Vendor Fair, which will be postponed for a time that is convenient and safe for everyone.  We will email all registrants when those details are finalized. 

I am a registrant for the Dog Jog or 5K Run. How do I collect my packet?

We can’t thank you enough for your participation in the Dog Jog, 5K or better yet—both! Special thank you goes to James River Air Conditioning for being our registration sponsor. On Friday, March 20, we plan on holding our drive-thru packet pick-up, sponsored by Michael and Sons, in the parking lot of the Richmond SPCA. Our race course tribute signs, sponsored by APEX Systems will be available to view outside during this time. We will deliver your limited edition t-shirt, race bib and swag directly to your car for your safety and convenience from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Please RSVP for your pickup time and day so that we may best coordinate our efforts. Your packet will be ready for you when you arrive and our team will bring it directly to your vehicle. Please do not come if you don’t feel well. We will hold on to your packet as long as needed.

If you are unable to pick up your packet on Friday, or aren’t feeling well,  please email Janae Jones at to schedule a time in the coming weeks to pick it up. You can also pick it up when we reschedule the Dominion Energy Vendor Fair at a time to be determined.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support for this event. The Dog Jog and 5K Run, sponsored by Holiday Barn Pet Resorts,  is one of our largest fundraisers. Annually, this event provides much-needed funds to support the homeless pets in our care. Sponsorship includes specific marketing benefits, most of which take place before the actual event, with the exception of the Dominion Energy Vendor Fair. We are working to reschedule the Dominion Energy Vendor Fair at a time that is convenient and safe for everyone  and will be in touch once those details are finalized. I am a registrant who cannot participate in the virtual run or pick up my packet. What should I do?

Thank you so much for your registration. Your support is already helping improve the lives of homeless animals. This is one of our largest fundraising events, and we really need you to make it a success. If you choose to forgo picking up your registration packet, your registration fee can transfer to a tax-deductible donation. Please contact Janae Jones at if you’d like to go this route. I understand this cancellation is going to impact the overall success of this event. How can I help?

We’re glad you asked! We do need your help reaching our fundraising goals for the homeless animals depending on us, and you can contribute to their care by purchasing a Dog Jog and 5K Run Raffle ticket, sponsored by NDSE from our website (we still have tons of great prizes you can redeem from your home).You can also purchase one of our limited edition Dog Jog and 5K Run t-shirts or bandanas online, and pick up at our front desk! A collector’s item this year for sure! Details will be on our website once they are available and on our social media channels. If you are a registrant, please activate and continue to advertise your  fundraising page to friends and family, particularly in light of this unanticipated cancellation. Our volunteer committee, staff and many other partners, have been working since last August to plan an amazing 18th Annual Dog Jog and 5k Run. This is a significant fundraising event for the Richmond SPCA, attracting thousands of people and raising a considerable amount of money that enables us to care for the nearly 4,000 animals, many of whom are sick and injured, we will help this year.
