Specials & Discounts
When you arrive at the Richmond SPCA, you'll be asked to fill out an Adopter Survey. This one-page survey gathers information about your expectations of pet ownership and helps us determine which animals might best suit your lifestyle. Based on the results of the survey, you'll receive a color-coded Guest Pass to help guide you to cats or dogs that best meet your expectations.
- Picture ID with your current address (if current address not available, please bring current utility bill).
- Proof of age (you must be 18 or older to adopt a pet from the Richmond SPCA).
- Proper form of payment (cash, credit/debit card, money order, Richmond SPCA gift card). Checks are not an accepted form of payment.
- A carrier for your adopted kitty or a leash and collar for your adopted dog. These and many more wonderful items for your new pet may also be purchased in our gift shop.

Adoption fees, which vary based upon the age of the animal and specials and promotions that occur throughout the year, include spay or neuter procedure, age-appropriate vaccinations, free behavior helpline support, a packet of valuable discount coupons and special offers, and more! In addition, all pets adopted from the Richmond SPCA will be microchipped prior to adoption. A microchip is inserted under your pet's skin and serves as a permanent form of identification. Registration with 24PetWatch for the first year is included. All Richmond SPCA alumni (and altered housemates) also qualify to become clients of the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital.
A potential adopter may place a reservation on a pet they meet at our Robins-Starr Humane Center. These reservations require a $20 deposit. We allow reservations to be placed on pets for two reasons: to allow another household member to meet the pet and/or to allow pet-to-pet introductions (typically resident dog meeting potential new dog). A 24-hour reservation may be placed on adult dogs weighing more than 25 lbs. and adult cats. A 4-hour reservation may be placed on pets under 6 months of age or any dog weighing 24 lbs. or less. If the reserve requirements are satisfied and result in an adoption, the deposit will be applied toward the adoption fee; otherwise, the deposit is non-refundable.
Our adoption center is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday and Monday from noon to 5 p.m. Click here for directions to our center. We also have cats available for adoption at the Petco locations in Carytown and host mobile adoption events at locations throughout the Greater Richmond area. If you are interested in adopting one of our cats located at Petco in Carytown, please call our adoption desk at 521-1307 and an adoption counselor will schedule an appointment for you.
Our free Match Finder tool is designed to help you find your new best friend by automatically emailing you when a pet matching your desired criteria is available. If you don't see the pet you're looking for among the cats and dogs currently available for adoption at our Robins-Starr Humane Center, fill out the form on our Match Finder page with your contact information to sign up using an email address you check regularly.
