Our Pet Support Services team is here to help you access resources and navigate the options available anytime you face a challenge in caring for your companion. They can counsel you about using the many programs and services we offer and those available elsewhere in the community. Our goal is to help you to resolve the problems you are experiencing so that you can keep your pet.
The Richmond SPCA’s Project Safety Net programs are designed to help keep pets in homes rather than surrendering them to shelters. Many pet-related challenges have solutions, and we can help you overcome those challenges in order for your family to stay together. We can provide:
Placing a pet directly in another responsible home is preferable to them having to enter a shelter. Rehoming allows you to manage the process and build a relationship with the new family. We can help you publicize a pet you are no longer able to care for so that they find another loving guardian. Add your pet to our free rehoming page.
Immediate surrender is not available. We are a no-kill shelter and depend on pets in our care being adopted to make space in our center for new arrivals. Please contact us as early in your decision-making process as possible to make the fullest use of our services. We will work together to develop a plan for your companion.
The majority of the pets at our humane center are ones we have transferred into our care from government shelters where those animals’ lives were at risk. We urge you use all the resources our Project Safety Net offers to explore alternatives to surrender before giving up your pet to a shelter.
