Pets Evacuated from South Georgia Wildfires Arrive in RVA

As wildfires spread across South Georgia at the end of April, local shelters quickly faced an urgent challenge, making space for pets displaced by evacuations and emergency response efforts.

With more animals expected to arrive as evacuations continued, shelters in South Georgia, particularly Glynn County, needed help immediately. BISSELL Pet Foundation, a longtime disaster response partner of the Richmond SPCA, contacted shelters across the region to coordinate emergency transfers from Glynn County Animal Services.

The Richmond SPCA was ready to help.

Our pet support services and animal care teams quickly prepared space within our humane center for incoming animals. On May 7, four adult cats and fifteen kittens arrived in Richmond through a coordinated transport effort with Rescue Riders.

Despite their long journey, the cats and kittens quickly settled into their new surroundings, eating, drinking, exploring, and curling up alongside their siblings after a stressful few days.

The pets arriving at the Richmond SPCA were already admitted in Glynn County before the wildfire emergency escalated. By transferring them to partner shelters, Glynn County Animal Services can focus its resources on caring for pets directly impacted by the fires and families forced to evacuate.

This collaborative effort between BISSELL Pet Foundation, Glynn County Animal Services, Rescue Riders, and Richmond SPCA reflects the lifesaving power of partnership during moments of crisis. While the immediate need was creating space, these efforts also serve as a reminder of why we do this work every day, ensuring pets have safety, compassion, and a path forward when they need it most.

Three of the four adult cats, as well as four of the kittens, that were transferred in have been adopted. The remaining kittens are currently being cared for in foster homes and will be available for adoption once they are ready.

Brunswick, the oldest cat to come into our care from this transfer, is awaiting his new home. Pet Details - Richmond SPCA
