Compassion in Action: July 2026

A Summer of Compassion and Learning

This summer, Josiah Burton, a 2026 graduate of Varina High School, joined our team for a summer internship through Partnership for the Future. The program creates a dedicated network of local high schools, colleges, and businesses to provide crucial resources for promising students with limited means who have their sights set on a college education – and an ambitious career.

Over an 8-week period, he joined every department of our organization to learn and provide hands-on assistance. Josiah’s energy and passion for this work was evident each day, and it’s safe to say he made a lasting impact on the Richmond SPCA, our staff, and every pet and family he encountered.

Josiah is attending Virginia Tech this Fall to study veterinary medicine.

Thank you, Josiah, for bringing your talents and compassion to the Richmond SPCA this summer.

A Message from Josiah:

Hi! I'm Josiah Burton, and I had the privilege of serving as the Richmond SPCA summer intern through Partnership for the Future.

I can honestly say I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity. My time at the Richmond SPCA has taught me so much, not only about animal welfare but also about teamwork, compassion, and the dedication it takes to care for every animal that walks through the doors. I had the opportunity to learn from several departments, including IVS, Animal Care, and Foster Care, and each one gave me a new perspective on the incredible work that happens behind the scenes.

I still remember my very first day. When I stepped into the building, I was completely lost and honestly a little overwhelmed by how large it was. As the weeks went on, I began to understand why everything was designed the way it was. It reminded me of a river, with different stops along the way, each department playing an important role in helping every animal on its journey until they finally reached adoption and found their lasting home. Seeing that process unfold made me appreciate just how much care, collaboration, and love goes into every success story.

More than anything, I am grateful for the people I met along the way. Every staff member welcomed me, answered my endless questions, and took the time to teach me something new. The knowledge, encouragement, and kindness I received throughout the summer have made a lasting impact on me. This experience has strengthened my passion for working with animals and has inspired me even more as I begin my journey toward becoming a veterinarian.

Thank you to everyone at the Richmond SPCA for believing in me, investing in my growth, and making this summer one I'll never forget.
