Compassion in Action: September 2025

September is the final month of our fiscal year, and FY25 came to a close on September 30 as we brought the 4,076th pet of the year into our care. This was an especially busy month for our shelter veterinary team, who treated 589 pets for illnesses and injuries in one of the busiest single months of the year. This month's cases included a rise in some of the routine concerns the team sees in the animals we shelter, such as upper respiratory infections and skin issues, as well as really unusual cases requiring extensive surgeries and consultations with veterinary specialists.

Our Cinderella Fund made it possible for our veterinary team to give extensive care to both Bogie and Pickle Pants. Although Bogie is only 3 years old, he already has osteoarthritis in multiple joints due to congenital abnormalities. When we transferred him from a partner municipal shelter, the large-breed dog only weighed 60 pounds and was experiencing severe muscle atrophy. Bogie needs two surgeries on his rear limbs to correct hip dysplasia. We have performed the first procedure, on his right hip, and time in foster care is helping with his recovery before his second surgery.

Pickle Pants has also enjoyed a foster home after a surgical procedure. The adorable black and white kitten was suffering from chronic, painful ear infections that permanently damaged his ear canal. We performed a surgery to remove his right ear canal, ensuring Pickle Pants will no longer suffer these recurring infections.

Restoring homeless animals to health is just one of the ways we see Compassion in Action. Our full September report is found in the graphics below.
