Our Veterinarians

Angela Ivey, DVM
Director of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Ivey with Jupiter, an infant kitten in our care

Dr. Ivey is a Kentucky native who joined the Richmond SPCA in 2004. An alumnus of the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Louisville, she earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1985. Dr. Ivey worked in private practice for nearly 20 years, opening both a successful clinic in Colonial Heights and a satellite clinic in Chester.

As Director of Veterinary Medicine at the Richmond SPCA, Dr. Ivey oversees the provision of all professional veterinary services. This includes services delivered to pets in the care of the Richmond SPCA awaiting adoption, as well as patients of the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital and Smoky’s Spay & Neuter Clinic.

Andrea Berger, DVM
Associate Veterinarian, Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Berger with Zeke, a dog in our care

Born and raised outside of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Berger decided at age 8 that she wanted to either be a veterinarian or a flight attendant – she wanted to care for animals and see the world. Dr. Berger graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on the island of St. Kitts, in the West Indies.

Since graduating with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2002, Dr. Berger has practiced veterinary medicine in California, New York, Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Thailand, Nicaragua, Panama and Guatemala before moving to the Richmond area in 2018. Dr. Berger joined the Richmond SPCA’s Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital staff in the summer of 2023.

At home, Dr. Berger has three rescue dogs, an elementary school teacher husband and a daughter, all who keep her on her toes. In her spare time, Dr. Berger loves to read, kayak, crochet and search for the best tacos in Richmond.

Courtney Bowers, DVM
Lead Veterinarian, Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Bowers with her dog Luke

Dr. Bowers is a 2013 graduate of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. An equine internship at Woodside Equine Clinic brought Dr. Bowers to the Richmond area. She transitioned from horses to working on small animals to stay in RVA and soon began donating her time and skills to the Richmond SPCA. When an opening arose at the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital, she joined the team. Her professional interests include geriatric care, alternative therapies (acupuncture and laser therapy) and dentistry.

When she is not helping patients, Dr. Bowers enjoys adventuring and spending time with her husband, their son and their beloved pets: dogs Luke and Violet, cat Junior and horse Pedro.

Alexandria Ent, DVM
Associate Veterinarian, Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Ent with her cat Goku

Originally from Ohio, Dr. Ent graduated from Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2022. She then relocated to Denver, Colorado to complete an internship program in shelter and community medicine with the Dumb Friends League. After her time with the League, Dr. Ent moved to Richmond in 2023 to join the team at the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital. She is excited to continue with her passion for providing accessible, quality veterinary care to pets and their people.

Dr. Ent shares her home with her partner and their 2 cats, Goku and Kagome. She enjoys spending time with family, hiking, reading and crocheting.

Brit’nee Haskins, DVM
Associate Veterinarian, Smoky’s Spay & Neuter Clinic

Dr. Haskins with her dog Mamacita

Dr. Haskins began her work at the Richmond SPCA as a veterinary assistant in 2012 in our pilot Clinic for Compassionate Care, also working as an assistant in our shelter veterinary services department on weekends.

Dr. Haskins left her position at the Richmond SPCA in 2014 to pursue her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, which she received in 2018 from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

She joined us as an associate veterinarian at the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital after spending a year at the Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, D.C. as a rotating doctor in small animal medicine and surgery.

Dr. Haskins’ favorite part of her work with the Richmond SPCA is having the opportunity to meet the members of our community (humans and pets) exactly where they are and helping her patients in any way that she can. When she’s not providing veterinary care to patients of Smoky’s Spay & Neuter Clinic, Dr. Haskins can be found doing yoga, on a run or gardening with the help of her dog Mamacita and her cat Medici.

David Molinas, DVM
Associate Veterinarian, Shelter Veterinary Services

Dr. Molinas with Duke Silver, a cat whose life we saved and who benefited from a surgery Dr. Molinas performed on him

Dr. Molinas is a 2012 graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine who began his career at a private practice in Denver, Colorado.

After realizing a passion to offer accessible care to all pet guardians, Dr. Molinas transitioned to Pet Aid, a hospital providing services to clients with limited means in the Denver area. After four years, Dr. Molinas relocated to join the team of the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital, bringing this valuable experience.

Though Dr. Molinas works primarily with our internal veterinary services team treating homeless pets in the care of our shelter, he can still be found helping patients of our Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital on occasion, particularly with more complex surgical procedures.

When not performing intensive surgeries, Dr. Molinas enjoys outdoor activities with his wife, their two children, and dogs Yeti and Hank.

Karen Pearson, DVM
Associate Veterinarian, Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Pearson with Ruth, a kitten in our care

Dr. Pearson is a 2013 graduate of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Pearson and her family relocated to Richmond in 2022 after living in England for five years. While living in the UK, she worked for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as a military veterinary hospital, providing care for military working dogs and pets belonging to military families stationed in the region.

Dr. Pearson shares her life with her husband, teenaged son, and two cats. Dr. Pearson enjoys spending time with her family, traveling and bingeing home renovation shows.
