RICHMOND, VA — During Clear The Shelters, a nationwide pet adoption and donation initiative, all adoption fees at the Richmond SPCA are sponsored for the full week starting Monday, August 18 through Sunday, August 24. This lifesaving event is made possible through the generosity of The Betty J. Parmer Trust, which is paying adoption fees for all qualified adopters.

The sponsorship honors the late Ms. Parmer’s deep compassion for animals and is also a tribute to the pets that brought joy and comfort to her life — especially Max, a beloved dog who was by her side during her final years in Richmond and through hospice care.

As trustee of the Betty J. Parmer Trust, Michele Davis is helping to ensure that more animals can experience the kind of love and companionship that have meant so much to her family.

Davis said, “I am deeply honored to announce that the Betty J. Parmer Trust is sponsoring this year’s Clear The Shelters event in memory of Betty’s kind heart and a profound love for animals, a passion that began during her childhood on a small farm. This sponsorship is a wonderful way to celebrate her legacy by helping animals find the loving homes they so deserve.

“Our family dog, Max, brought her immense joy and comfort while she was here in the Richmond area. This feels like a beautiful way to give back in her honor. I am also reminded of the joy and companionship that rescued pets can bring into our lives by Boomer, my daughter’s dog, and a Richmond SPCA alumnus, who will be turning 12 on January 26, 2026. My hope is that this week of fee-waived adoptions brings more families together and honors my Aunt Betty’s spirit in the best possible way.”

The Richmond SPCA invites the community to welcome home a new companion during this weeklong celebration and help transform the lives of homeless animals — just as Max and Boomer did for the people who love them.
