Richmond SPCA and Dominion Energy invite fundraisers to go Over The Edge of the Thomas F. Farrell II Building to help animals in need

Posted on Friday, August 19, 2022

Over The Edge for the Richmond SPCA returns on Saturday, September 24 with the opportunity for supporters to rappel 20 stories after raising funds for animals in need. Those who reach the $1,000 fundraising goal are rewarded with a spot on the roof of Dominion Energy’s Thomas F. Farrell II Building.

This is the second year that Dominion Energy will present Over The Edge for the Richmond SPCA at the company’s downtown office building, located at 600 E. Canal Street, overlooking the James River. Last year’s event raised just over $100,000 to help the Richmond SPCA provide sheltering, adoption and low-cost veterinary care for animals in need, and to support the organization’s mission to create a more compassionate community through education and advocacy. The nonprofit hopes to raise at least $90,000 through this year’s event.

Tamsen Kingry says the rappel was an exhilarating experience and view.

“After completing the rappel myself last year, I can say it is an exhilarating way to see the River City,” Richmond SPCA Chief Executive Officer Tamsen Kingry said. “Many of the same people who had contributed to get me to the roof were watching from the sidewalk as I went Over The Edge. When the sound of their cheering reached me, the nerves evaporated, and I remembered only the lifesaving cause that brought me there.”

Limited rappel spots are available and 2022 is the last year that Over The Edge for the Richmond SPCA will be held. The first 76 fundraisers who reach the $1,000 fundraising minimum will have their spots reserved. With a little more than a month to go, 36 fundraisers have qualified to rappel.

“The Richmond SPCA does meaningful work, supporting pet adoption, veterinary care and training classes, among a host of services for our community,” said Keith Windle, Dominion Energy senior vice president of administrative services. “We’re proud to host the Richmond SPCA’s Over The Edge fundraiser. Brave participants get a chance to rappel 335 feet from the top of the Farrell Building. I hope everyone will consider joining us in September. The view is awesome up there!”

Each participant gets a personal fundraising webpage to share and use to reach their fundraising goal. Visit the event website, givesignup.org/overtheedge to learn more, to register or to support a hopeful rappeller who has already signed up.
